We have built more WordPress sites than we can count. We still build them, and we still keep a lot of them fast and secure for clients who love them. So it may surprise you to hear that when someone asks us for a new website today, WordPress is usually not our first answer anymore.
Here is why the answer changed, and why that is good news for you.
Why WordPress won in the first place
For fifteen years, WordPress was the pragmatic default, and for a good reason. It solved the hardest problem in web design: letting people who are not developers build and change a real website. Themes, page builders, and a plugin for nearly everything meant a small business could get online, look sharp, and stay in control of its own content. That flexibility is why WordPress runs a huge share of the web, our own past sites included.
But that flexibility was never free. Every plugin, every page-builder layer, every extra theme feature adds weight. The site that is easy to build is very often the site that loads slowly, needs constant updates, and gives attackers more doors to try. For years that was simply the trade you made. Easy to run, heavier to carry. It was worth it, because the fast alternative required a developer for every little change.
Two things changed the math
The reason WordPress won was ease. AI just made the fast option every bit as easy.
First, AI removed the design drag on the other side of the fence. Modern frameworks like Astro build the kind of clean, lightweight site that used to require a developer for every headline and every photo swap. That was always the catch: blazing fast, but you needed a coder for the smallest edit. AI changed that. We can now design, build, and update an Astro site as quickly as we ever moved inside a page builder, without dragging the weight along with us. The one thing that made WordPress the default, ease, no longer requires WordPress.
Second, the web itself started reading differently. Search engines and AI assistants increasingly read your website with a machine before a single human ever sees it. When someone asks an assistant for “the best roofer in Columbus,” something has to parse your pages and decide whether you are the answer. A clean, lightweight site gets read perfectly. A heavy, plugin-stacked one gets skimmed, or skipped entirely.
We tested it on our own site
We did not want to make this case with a client’s site, so we made it with ours.
standandstretch.com is our old WordPress site. standandstretch.ai is the same brand, same content, same budget, rebuilt on Astro. We put them head to head on the day we published this.
First, raw speed. In a load test, our Astro homepage painted its main content in two tenths of a second. The WordPress version took 4.2 seconds, and most of that was the server just answering the phone.
Then the full quality scan (Google Lighthouse, mobile). Here is what came back:
Look at that first row. AI-Readiness measures how well an automated reader, the kind Google and every AI assistant now use, can actually understand your page. Our WordPress site scored a 33. The Astro rebuild scored a 100. That is the single number that made up our minds. The traffic of the next five years is going to move through machines that read your site first, and a site they cannot read is a store with the lights off.
Same brand. Same content. Same budget. One site gets read by AI perfectly. The other gets read at a third of that.
And it costs the same
This is the part people expect to be the catch. It is not. An Astro build costs about what a comparable WordPress build costs. You are not paying a premium for speed. You are simply getting a site that loads faster, stays cleaner, is easier for us to keep secure, and is built to be understood by the tools that now decide who gets found.
To be clear, this is not a grudge
WordPress is still the right call for plenty of businesses. A large store running WooCommerce, a team already trained on the dashboard, a site that leans on a specific plugin ecosystem: those are real reasons to stay, and if that is you, we will keep your WordPress site fast, updated, and secure. Gladly.
The point is not that WordPress is bad. It built the modern web. The point is that the reason most small businesses reached for it by default has quietly gone away, and a lot of owners have not heard the news yet.
So the next time you think about a new site or a rebuild, the honest question is no longer “WordPress, or something harder and more expensive.” AI closed that gap. The question is simply which platform gives you the fastest, most future-proof site for your money. More and more, for our clients, the answer is Astro.
